It’s almost time to trick-or-treat! But before your kids head out the door, here are 10 safety tips to make sure their Halloween is a hoot.
Be Careful with Costumes
🎃 It’s fun to dress up, but make sure kids can see out of hats or masks and won’t trip on long capes, especially as they go up and down porch steps.
🎃 Clip a battery-operated bike light to their costume or treat bag, or use glow sticks — because who doesn’t love glow sticks?
🎃 Remind kids to keep a safe distance from lit jack-o-lanterns, candles, and dogs.
Navigate the Night
💡 Send a parent to follow along or have older kids go trick-or-treating in groups.
💡 Remind kids to stay on sidewalks, watch for traffic, and cross the street only at crosswalks.
💡 Tell kids to skip houses with the porch light off, and never enter a home or car.
💡 Give them a small flashlight to help find their way in the dark.
Screen Their Stash
🍫 Help kids look through their loot and discard anything with open wrappers or ingredients they may be allergic to.
🍫 Remind them to keep treats out of reach of smaller kids and pets, since some candy can be a choking hazard and chocolate is toxic to dogs.
And finally,
🍏 Have fun out there! Feel free to stop by Johnny’s Markets in costume on the way to or from your Halloween parades and parties. It’s a boo-tiful time of year at Johnny’s!
